The Elgin Fire Department is dedicated to providing a safe community through prevention and mitigation of emergencies in a professional and caring manner. The department of over 130 sworn firefighters provide a full range of coverage to 38.8 square miles and serve a population of over 108,000 people from seven fire stations.
Fire Station Six opened on May 1, 2005 and is located at 707 W. Chicago Street. Station Six responds to calls within the downtown area and the central near west section of the City. District 6 has Wing Street as its northern boundary, Spring Street to the east, McLean Boulevard to the west, and Route 20 to the south.
To learn more about the history of the Elgin Fire Department, visit the Elgin Barn #5 Museum, a Nationally Registered Historical Building and the second official landmark in Elgin. Established in 1903, it was the fifth original fire barn in Elgin which originally housed horses and a firefighting carriage. The Fire Barn has been out of operation since 1991, but it now operates as a museum which contain historical firefighting artifacts. Its rich history and spirit keep the Barn feeling lively with visitors coming from near and far to learn about decades worth of stories and services from our brave firefighters.
