Exploring Elgin – The Hidden Gem

Hello, we are Rylan and Daphne! 3 weeks ago, we moved to Elgin from Portland, Oregon. We were both born and raised in Portland, though the last 2 years we have spent in Seattle while Rylan finished grad school at the University of Washington. It has been a surprisingly smooth transition despite moving to almost the other side of the country! The intrigue surrounding Elgin and the delightfulness we feel to be able to experience it, has been a major factor in the comfortability of our move. The Fox River, biking trails, public art, and the Downtown Elgin Farmers Market are a few of the many things here that remind us of Portland. But after only several weeks, Elgin has proven to be amazing in its own right and we are thrilled to be new residents!

The cause for our relocation was Rylan’s acceptance of a position at the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. He is doing marketing and community outreach for the symphony. He is looking forward to opening night happening on October 8th. Daphne is working at The Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin, where she is an administrative assistant. We love the fact that our jobs work so closely within the diverse community. We are thankful to be here, do this work, and learn as much as we can about the people and history behind this city!

We have already had great opportunities to dive into Elgin’s history from the Public and Historic Museums to the Historic Elgin House Tour. We are especially blown away by the historic homes, their extensive history, and the preservation efforts that are in place. We have started to get familiar with the various neighborhoods as we look for a home to buy! Along with touring all the lovely neighborhoods we have also loved dining at the array of restaurants and are impressed with the wide variety of cuisines in town. On every occasion the people we have encountered have been so friendly and offered a warm welcome, which we greatly appreciate. We love the easy accessibility of the entire city, and the fact that we left the traffic in the Pacific Northwest. At the same time, we appreciate the proximity to a bigger city like Chicago, in case we ever do miss it. There is still more that we are anxiously awaiting to explore about Elgin, especially the upcoming holiday events and new projects happening around the city! Elgin is a hidden gem that we are excited to be involved in and experience. We hope to meet you soon!
