The Literacy Connection, an affiliate of ProLiteracy, is a non-profit, community-based 501(c)(3) organization helping individuals acquire fundamental literacy skills and learn to read, write, speak and understand English. Learners are provided tutoring services free of charge in the sixteen communities including Elgin. The Literacy Connection is dedicated to helping adults in the northwest suburbs reach their literacy goals through one-on-one volunteer tutoring and small group instruction.
Learning opportunities include their Adult Literacy program offering Basic Literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), Small Group ESL and Family Literacy. A Workplace Literacy program is also available.
The Literacy Connection helps neighbors in our community. Imagine not being able to read this sentence, open a bank account or find the right words to discuss an urgent problem with your doctor or your child’s teacher. The Literacy Connection helps adults improve their English so they may overcome challenges like these. Adult men and women of all ages, nationalities, economic, and social backgrounds benefit from Literacy Connection programs. In these programs they are paired with a trained volunteer literacy tutor to work 1-2 hours a week to help them learn to read, write, speak and understand English better so that they may achieve their personal and professional goals.
